Different Genres of Books I Want to Read in 2019

This is my seventh list in the #Project14lists, a blogging project initiated by the lovely Shealea. She is also hosting a great giveaway. If you haven’t checked it out already, find all the details here.

When it comes to genres in books, I mostly stick to reading fantasy. But I have decided that 2019 should be the year that I step out of my comfort zone and try out new things, and the first thing that I will apply this to is the love of my life, which, of course, are reading books. Below are the genres I am hoping to explore more of in 2019:

1. Historical Fiction

If you follow Reagan, or Peruse Project, which is the name of her booktube channel, you would know that she loves historical fiction. As someone who discovered booktube through Reagan and values her opinion, I have always thought of reading historical fiction, but kept on postponing it. I have had my brushes with books of this genre, having read the Book Thief by Markus Zuzak and the Glass Palace by Vikram Ghosh, both of which, despite being good, did not , I was hesitant to try out other books of this genre. But seeing the love having been showered on books such as the Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, the Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris, Next Year in Havana by Chanel Cleeton among many others, I think 2019 should be the year I try to read more historical fiction.

2. Science Fiction

Yes! The time has come when I should consider the near possibility of humanity leaving the planet of Earth and settling on Mars, due to the inevitable damage of the Global Warming! If you didn’t know what the previous sentence meant, it was a joke! And yes, I make terrible jokes, but I make them anyway. Did that get a laugh from you? A smile? No? Ok! Let’s move on. I made the joke because I think it’s time for me to “finally” read a science fiction book. I have never been interested in reading science fiction, or watching the movies of this genre, so what better than a new year to start one, to see whether I am interested or not? I think I will start with the Martian, maybe.

3. More Young Adult Contemporary, Please

If you have read one of my previous posts, this post to be exact, you will see a number of major contemporary authors in there. I have no excuses as to why I didn’t read their books, other than the fact that I didn’t, and which I need to amend asap. So, 2019 will be the year when I will finally catch up to the books everyone is gushing about.

4. Magical Realism

I tried to dive into the world of magical realism by buying none other than the famed author Haruki Murakami’s book, the Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. I don’t know whether it was my reading slump to blame, or the bizarre events occurring in the book, but I ended up not finishing it. I think it’s time to pick up a different book to see whether magical realism is my cup of tea or not!

Well! It’s my goal to expand my horizons and read more books of the above genre. Here’s hoping for some great reading in 2019!

What do you think? Are there any other genres that I should read too? I would love to know your thoughts!

  1. Oohh, you’re making me consider venturing out of my comfort zone next year as well. Maybe I’ll try a horror book… Or maybe I’ll just dip my toes back into historical romances, which I miss reading. Lmao. Hope you find books in these genres that you enjoy!

    1. Thank you! I hope you have a great year in reading as well. And yes I would suggest trying out horror books! I am biased coz I love horror lol! Historical romances sound fun too! But yes, most importantly, read what you love!

  2. My main goal is to read less YA next year. I love YA and it will likely always be a large part of my reading life, but there’s so many good adult books out there and I really need to make them a larger part of my reading life.

  3. Yes to science fiction! I noticed a distinct lack of sci-fi in my reading from 2018 – despite the fact that I adore sci-fi! – so I’m going to be making more of an effort to read that in 2019.

  4. Definitely try out Science Fiction! It’s one of my favourite genres and it’s so otherworldly (almost literally) XD Also, YA Contemporary HAS to be on your list so I’m happy it is there 😀 Good luck stepping into other genres in the new year ❤
